In the context of shotguns, bore size is not measured in millimeters, as it is with handguns or rifles. Instead, a traditional system based on the weight of a lead sphere is used. This method classifies shotguns according to the number of lead spheres, all with the same diameter as the gun's bore, that can be obtained from one pound of lead. Thus, the bore designation reflects the number of spheres that can be made from that amount of lead.
